locker rentals, two family slides, two up-hill water coasters,
teen tube slides, a family wave pool and a large children's
activity area.
Blastenhoff -
the newest section of the waterpark, features a large group
tent, a play area for children complete with a pirate ship, four
speed slides, a river with rapids, a hot tub with swim up bar,
and numerous beaches.
Background -
Schlitterbahn, which means 'slippery road' in German, opened in
1979 with four water slides starting from a German-style tower.
The tower was patterned after the Bergfried Guard Tower in
Braunfels, Germany - home of the original settlers of New
Braunfels. The Henry family built the tower and the slides on a
hill next to a riverfront resort called Landa Resort.
There are three
Schlitterbahn Waterparks, the original in New Braunfels, Texas,
Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island, Texas, and
the newest member of the "American's First Family of
Waterparks," Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark in
historic Galveston, Texas. Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort on the
banks of the spring-fed Comal River in New Braunfels opened in
1979 and includes a huge waterpark and two resorts.
Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark next to Gulf of Mexico on South
Padre Island opened in 2001 and includes a cutting-edge
waterpark and a full-service restaurant. A fourth park is
currently under construction in Kansas City, Kansas.
