NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Advanced registration is now underway for the Schlitterbahn Kids’ Triathlon held on Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m.  Children ages 7 to 14 are invited to swim, bike and run in and around the waterpark.  The fifth annual triathlon is expected to draw nearly 300 kid athletes, and has drawn more than 1,000 participants during its first four years.  Athletes who register before April 1 will receive an event t-shirt as an early registration gift. The Schlitterbahn Kids Triathlon benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas which helps children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-on-one relationships with mentors.

“At a time when childhood obesity is reaching alarming rates, our goal is to show kids that life-long physical fitness can be fun and rewarding,” said Darren Hill, general manager of Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort, “We make sure every participant feels like a winner.  In addition to the self-esteem the athletes gain from competing in a real triathlon and raising money for charity, they also receive a finishing medal and a complimentary Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort admission ticket,” Hill added.

“We are excited about the Schlitterbahn Kids’ Triathlon and confident that our new partnership with the Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort will be successful in promoting awareness about children’s health,” said Shannon Dixon, Comal and Guadalupe Branch Coordinator.  Executive vice president Denise Barkhurst also explained that “Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas strongly believes that children should maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, and will be integrating fitness activities through new initiatives this year.”

YMCA of New Braunfels will host two free triathlon camps designed to give children the skills and confidence to compete.  The camps will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 and on Saturday, April 5.  Each camp is staffed by the fitness experts at the YMCA.
