Let’s Learn German, Schlitter-Freunds!

At Schlitterbahn, our German heritage is no secret. As a matter of fact, even if you have never visited a Schlitterbahn waterpark, you may have seen the German-themed buildings, Bavarian-inspired décor, or at least noticed some of the tongue-twisting names given to our attractions and park sections.

When Billye and Bob Henry founded Schlitterbahn in 1979, they chose to pay homage to the German heritage of New Braunfels, Texas – where Schlitterbahn began. The name “Schlitterbahn” roughly translates to “slippery road” in German and has become synonymous with summertime fun in Texas. There are several other words within the parks that are German-inspired. So, you may know more German than you think!

We thought it was a good idea to jump into a foreign language course. Of course, German was our language of choice. So, let’s learn German!

First, here are some fun Schlitterbahn words in German:

  • Freund = Friend
  • Wasser = Water
  • Der Fluss = The River
  • Spaß = Fun
  • Sonne = Sun
  • Wasserrutsche = Water Slide
  • der Strand = The Beach
  • Schatze = Sweetheart or Loved One
  • Surfenberg = Surf Mountain
  • Blastenhoff = Full of Hope or Blast-Hope
  • Tubenbach = Okay, we made this up, but it sounds cool, right? 😊

Now, some practical words:

  • Hallo = Hello
  • Danke = Thank you
  • Bitte = Please
  • I don’t know = Ich weiß es nicht
  • Auf Wiedersehen or Tschüss = Goodbye
  • Ja = yes
  • Nein = No
  • Wo ist? = Where is?
  • Ich Liebe Dich = I love you
  • Die Toilette = Bathroom
  • Mein Name ist = My name is
  • I love Schlitterbahn = Ich liebe Schlitterbahn

Good job, class. Until next time, Schlitterfreunds!
